Media Evaluation
I am quite pleased with the overall outcome of my music magazine and by looking at the different music magazines that are out there I was able to use certain ideas and looks from other magazines and portray then into my magazine.
My front cover follows a typical layout to a magazine with a big photo being displayed to attract the attention of readers, with colorful writing also on the cover to attract their attention with what is included in the specific magazine. The title of the magazine being the largest font on the cover as the case on most magazine covers and what’s included inside being in a smaller font but still easily readable.
I also used examples of contents pages to get ideas for my magazine contents and I followed the idea of having a relevant picture of the main story of the magazine on the contents page to show the main headline of what’s included in the magazine. I then used a standard layout of the page number and what is on that page in two columns down the contents page.
My double page spread also used some ideas from current magazines. I used a large relevant image over the two pages which is commonly done in many magazines out there. I then used columns for my information and used a large font for the title to attract readers to that certain page which is done in most magazines. The writing in the columns was a much smaller font than the one used for the title of the page. I used different colours to make the page colourful and attractive to read.
My music magazine focuses on people that are interested in dance and hardcore music as the name of the magazine suggests as it is called, ‘hardcore heaven’. I use a picture of a DJ using a mixing deck on the front page in order to attract people that like that certain music. I also use an image of a wall as a background for the cover as I believe it gives that club/underground feel to the magazine which is commonly associated to the type of music. The writing I use on the cover and on the contents is also gives a feel of the type of music the magazine is talking about as it is a light graffiti font and the writing on the cover has outlines of a bright neon style blue round it to give that club feel to the magazine.
The kind of media institution that would be interested in distributing my magazine would be music as it is a dance/hardcore music magazine and so they would be the institution that would be interested in it as they sell magazines to do with music as well as CD’s etc which could also be linked with my magazine for promotional purposes and to attract the attention of magazine readers. The audience that it would be aimed would be people interested in music or more specifically dance/hardcore music but the magazine also includes information about venues and club events so could attract a larger audience than just people interested in that type of music.
As I said above I have created the presentation and content of my magazine to suit the audience I am aiming it to. As I have used features like pictures of DJs, neon style lighting and the cover including a background of a wall to give a club feel associated with that style of music. The content of my magazine also is made to appeal to my audience as it includes new and popular songs of that genre which people will be interested, it shows readers upcoming gigs and events so they can keep up to date with what’s going on in the club/hardcore music scene which they will find appealing and also offers much more information like upcoming DJs etc that they may be interested in knowing about.
In making my music magazine I have had to use new software and technology that I have never used before and had to learn to adapt and use it so I could fulfill the task of making the magazine. I have used Adobe Photoshop in order to create my front cover and contents and Adobe In Design in order to create my double page spread. It was quite hard to learn how to use the new software as it was new to me and had no experience using it before but I learnt quite quickly through getting help and was able to complete my task. I now know how to use the two software’s and would feel comfortable using them by myself in order to create something else.
Although I am quite pleased with the final product of my music magazine I believe I could of done things differently in order to create a more professional and presentable magazine. I was happy with my front cover but was not too pleased with my contents as I didn’t spend as much time on it as I could have and could of made it look a lot more professional than it is. I could have included a lot more pages to make the magazine longer like a lot of magazines are. I could of also put the contents into structured columns to make it look neater and clearer to see what was on each page. My double page spread could of also been better as I could of included more information and used better colour’s to make the writing stand out. As far as timing is concerned I could of balanced my time a lot better than I did and spaced out my work so I had more time on my magazine and could have used more complex tools in order to make it look more professional but because I didn’t use my time too well I was only able to use basic tools and could only make my magazine look so good whereas if I had more time I could of used different fonts and shapes that would make it more appealing and attractive to readers.
